US OPEN OF SURFING

The U.S. Open of Surfing is one of the largest and most prestigious surf competitions in the world, held annually in Huntington Beach, California, known as "Surf City USA". The event attracts top professional surfers and emerging talent, as well as thousands of spectators. Attendance figures can reach 500,000 visitors, making it one of the biggest action sports gatherings globally.
It serves as a key event for the World Surf League and its sponsors. The event also boosts the local economy and provides a platform for surf brands to showcase new products, trends, and innovations.
For this project, I collaborated with a team to create an immersive mural spanning the length of the iconic Huntington Beach Pier for the event sponsors, Nike, Hurley and Converse. We developed the design in the UK before traveling to Los Angeles to install it. The mural combined illustration and typography with graffiti contributed by spectators, making it a dynamic and interactive piece. It featured athletes sponsored by the brands, including legendary surfer Rob Machado and rising star Kolohe Andino. Uniquely, the mural was pre-cut with a pattern that allowed it to be dismantled after the event and reassembled into interlocking tables and chairs, later used by local businesses.
